IF there was a God, She would not have allowed the Panthers to level the score against the Tigers last Friday night after the final whistle and snatch victory in extra time. We should bring back the draw. A draw is honourable and neither team should walk away from such a spirited, line-ball performance with nothing to show for it. The players were all winners on the night, every one of them, as were we who watched.

LATELY the politicians and the media are all atwitter with concern about foreign interference in Australia's affairs. The anxiousness is about the Chinese and their governing Communist Party. It would seem they lavish expense on the major political parties in an effort to insert rather than dismiss Prime Ministers. Does anyone notice that this newfound paranoia may be driven by overseas powers that worry about the displacement of their own influence on Australia's policies? Truly this anti-China blather is redolent of the flatulence of Eugene McCarthy's corpse.

I GET frustrated and annoyed at the continual inference that retirees, whether they be self-funded or supported, don't contribute to the government's coffers. I accept that most don't pay income tax, but what about the other taxes that we pay? We spend, and in so doing pay GST, fuel tax, stamp duty and more.

TO add to Geoff Black (Letters 10/04) why doesn't the Electoral Commission put out an election statement from each major party prior to an election? Any advertising by the parties should only come from party funds.
John McLennan, Charlestown
IN reply to Denise Lindus Trummel (Short Takes 10/4), the V8 Supercars inject millions of dollars a year into the Newcastle economy, let's not forget that.

WITH the Adani mine now approved (AFR 9/4), is it the final nail in the Coalition coffin?
Brian Roach, Whitebridge
THE Australian Defence Force has 10 full-time gender advisers and 135 who have taken the course (Daily Telegraph 5/4). I think I knew the difference between a boy and a girl when I was about three years old. How long does it take to learn to operate a tank, or a rifle, let alone a ship? Teachers would be very pleased.

WE are now entering the federal election silly season where all of your dreams and wishes will come true, but at whose expense? We continue to get promises, mainly unachievable, from both major parties which allow One Nation, Shooters and other groups whose representatives' only ambition is to pick up a parliamentary pension to gain more political power. Health, aged care, power prices and affordable living are the main issues. Regulation of charges and tax benefits these companies receive will assist in controlling prices.
