NEWCASTLE could require their fourth halfback pairing of the season when they tackle St George Illawarra in Mudgee on Sunday after an injury to five-eighth Connor Watson.
Watson was reported to have been on crutches, with his left foot in a protective boot, after Saturday's 22-10 win against Canterbury at Suncorp Stadium.
Winger Edrick Lee was also nursing a foot injury. Both will have scans on Monday but are facing at least a week on the sidelines.
Knights skipper Mitchell Pearce has already lined up alongside Watson, Kalyn Ponga and Mason Lino in the halves this season.
Versatile Kurt Mann could become his fourth playmaking partner if Watson is ruled out, although Mann might also fill in on the left edge, as he did against the Bulldogs when Lee was hurt.
"He's got a small problem with his foot," Knights coach Nathan Brown said of Lee.
"To what extent, I'm not too sure. He'll have to have a scan and you'd have to say he's doubtful for next week."
Brown's other option would be to move in-form centre Hymel Hunt onto the wing, allowing either Sione Mata'utia or Tautau Moga to play at left-side centre.
