Dianne Hamer, Castle Personnel CEO, recently said she believes the vast majority of people believe people with a disability deserve equal opportunities to find work.

Supporting them to find work, or re-enter the workforce, is a positive thing to do. When it comes to taking action though, a disconnect exists.

"Seventy-seven per cent of business owners surveyed said that they were open to employing someone with a disability, but only 39% of larger businesses and 29% of small-to-medium businesses surveyed actually do employ a person with a disability," Dianne said.

"For people living with a disability in the Hunter Region, unemployment rates are almost double that of the broader regional rates.

"This is a significant social problem within our community and it is my desire to make this positive change a priority for every responsible business leader in our community."

Employment helps people find meaning in their life, offers purposeful connection with their community and, most importantly, provides financial and social independence.

"In no cohort is this more important than for people living with a disability," Dianne said.

"However, you should not view hiring a person with a disability as an act of charity. You should expect to gain a valuable and contributing member to your team."

The secret to success is matching the right person to the right job.

"When you choose to work with Castle, you are choosing almost 30 years' experience and the largest, local, community based, not-for-profit disability employment specialist in the region," Dianne said.

"Castle present candidates who are the right fit for your business, with appropriate qualifications, experience and skills, all at no cost to you, ever. If you want to be a part of a community movement putting disability inclusion on the business agenda and building a more inclusive community, I encourage you to contact me for a no-obligation chat."
