Thriving support program

Life Without Barriers hosts a range of activities for people with disability - or they can work with our team to develop activities that cater to their interests - it's up to them.

PLACE TO GROW: Bella enjoys a range of activities in the Lifestyle Supports program with Life Without Barriers as part of her NDIS package.

Bella loves growing and eating vegies, delivering Meals on Wheels to our elderly community, and getting about Newcastle on public transport.

These are just some of the things that Bella does in her Lifestyle Supports program with Life Without Barriers as part of her NDIS package.

Bella likes to keep busy and be out in the community, so Life Without Barriers has tailored a program just for her.

"[I've learned how] to grow cabbage, do gardening and grow strawberries!" Bella said. "And then I eat them!"

"[I've learned how to use] the bus and train and tram!" she said excitedly. "The train" is her favourite.

Life Without Barriers hosts a range of activities for people with disability - or they can work with our team to develop activities that cater to their interests - it's up to them.

They have activity centres in the CBD on Union St, as well as "The Burrows," which is in a rural setting where participants can grow vegies, collect eggs from chickens, or take part in cooking, arts or woodwork programs.

The Burrows is one of Bella's favourite places and where she spends two of her days through the week.

In addition to the day centres, Life Without Barriers also supports people with disability to be out and about in community, engaging in activities that they want to access.

"There is no limit to what you can do," Life Without Barriers Operations Manager, Neil Egan said.

"We can tailor a program for you."

Neil emphasises that service providers like LWB make the programs meaningful.

"It's our job to provide the best service for people with disability, ensuring they have a range of engaging activities they can access," he said.

Bella does different activities every day of the week.

"She does the arts program; delivers meals on wheels and visits our elderly; does the gardening and cooking program and puts together vegie packs from the garden and local wholesale grocer as part of a vegie box initiative for families and staff," Neil said.

"Bella's favourite task is collecting the money that goes back into activity programs. It's important we offer activities with purpose for participants to feel part of the community and have similar opportunities to the rest of the community."

"One thing we've done with Bella, and many other clients, is build their capacity on public transport, so they are able to get around on their own. That's something really exciting to see."

When Bella is asked what she would tell people who are thinking of enquiring about Lifestyle Support services, she said: "The people are nice!"
